Front ends are full of things that could make noise when you turn your car or go over something that causes your suspension to travel.

The following diagram depicts an average type front-end in a rear-wheel drive car. The following diagram depicts a front-end of a car with front wheel drive.

Noises and Possible Causes:

High Pitch when turning:

SerpentineBelt.gif It could be caused by a worn out serpentine belt. To determine if it’s your belt, examine both side of the serpentine belt, looking for cracks and shininess. Another possibility could be your power steering pump is going out or is low on fluid.

Clunking sound as you turn and speeds up as your speed increases:

cvj.jpgThat would most likely be your CV Joint going out.  This stands for Constant Velocity Joint.  It supplies a constant velocity to your front wheels as the wheel travels up and down and turns side to side.  The CV Joint usually goes bad when the rubber protector, boot, develops cracks.  The compromised boot allows moisture and dirt into the joint.  This breaks down the grease causing metal on metal which is most noticeable under load (turning at low speed).
