Brakes Squeak After Being Serviced
Numerous times, I've been asked why their brakes squeak and/or pulsate after doing their own brakes or having their brakes done by a non-dealer.
I'd like to start by saying that I have very strong opinions on this. I was taught how to brake jobs by a childhood friend who was a certified Ford front end mechanic. I've followed his advice and it has never let me down.
Ok. In regards to squeaking, it is caused primarily by either a warped rotor/drum and/or dirty hardware.
Here's what I do, which has paid off for me:
- Purchase quality pads/shoes
- If you need to replace a rotor or drum, replace both on the same axle.
- If your rotors and drums can be resurfaced, always have them resurfaced. You can have this done at places like NAPA and Kragen for around $15-$35 each.
- Always replace the hardware. What I mean by hardware are the springs, clips, and metal inserts that make up the braking system. Check out the following images to get what I mean.
- Disc Brake Hardware:
- Drum Brake Hardware:
- If your car requires you to pull the wheel bearing to access the rotors, replace with new bearings.
- Lastly, always perform a full brake system flush.
I have had more debates on this than I care to recall. But, all I know is that following these simple rules, I have avoided many do-it-again jobs. In addition, many people have not taken my advice, and I end up at their house in a couple months trying to figure out what they did wrong.
